These Victorian earrings have an ornately carved coral drop at the bottom.
The carving is a floral motif. At the top, there is a smooth round coral
bead. The earring wires and other findings are rose gold; most likely
9kt.
In ancient China, coral jewelry was worn to show wealth and social status.
During the Roman era, it was believed that coral could cure wounds made by
snakes and scorpions and diagnose diseases by changing color. In the
Victorian era, coral was given as a gift of protection. It was believed
that coral would protect the wearer from harm. It was a popular gift to
newborns.
