Tortoiseshell & 18kt. Maltese cross

The center of this tiered 18kt. yellow gold brooch is tortoiseshell.  Set into the tortoiseshell is a gold Maltese cross adorned with 4 hearts.   The back of the brooch contains a glass covered locket which can be used to hold a special keepsake or photo.

About the design:  The Maltese cross was based on the crosses used in the First Crusade.   It has four arms with eight points which symbolize:

• Loyalty
• Piety
• Generosity
• Bravery
• Glory and honor
• Perseverance
• Helpfulness towards the poor and the sick
• Respect for the church

Dimensions:  1.5 inches in diameter (4 cm)

Year: 1870-90

Condition: excellent,  original c clasp was replaced with 1920′s safety clasp
