Georgian portrait miniature of Louis, dauphin de France
Finely executed Georgian portrait miniature set in a one-of-a-kind frame! The vermeil frame is Russian and was created specifically for this Royal miniature.
The frame is incredibly beautiful with its paste garnets and paste opals. Atop the miniature is a Crown to signify the importance of the Royal miniature. The portrait miniature is on ivory and is signed “Toque” on the bottom left corner. This is an exceptional piece; a fine Royal portrait miniature set in an exquisite frame that was specifically made for it. The frame surrounding this miniature has paste “garnets” and paste “opals”.
What is paste? Paste is cut glass that has been faceted or cut to resemble diamonds or other precious stones. Jewelry historians credit the 18th century French jeweler Georges Frederic Stras for perfecting the art of cutting paste jewels. For this reason, paste is oftentimes called “strass”; especially by European collectors.
