“For a Friend” mourning ring

Sadly, impoverished Victorians could not afford outward signs of mourning.   Mourning jewelry was made almost exclusively for the upper classes.   It is rare to find a mourning ring not made of gold.

This yellow gold plated, enamel mourning ring commemorates the death of a friend.  One can only imagine how much the friend must have meant to the wearer.   Even though not gold, it would have been a very expensive item for a commoner.
