Mourning ring w/secret compartment
Rare early Victorian mourning ring decorated with a gold forget me not in black enamel surround. Inside the secret compartment is a wisp of hair under glass.
The glass can easily be removed so that your own keepsake could be placed inside the ring.
The style of the forget me not is in the classic French style. The French word Pensée means “to think of ” and the pansy flower was used to symbolize remembrance.
Dimensions: US size 6.5 ; top is 1 cm by 1.2 cm (metric conversion tool)
Year: 1830-50
Condition: good, some wear appropriate with age including minor surface scratches on the enamel (seen only with a loupe). Ring was sized at some point at the back of shank.
