Victorian snake/hair earrings
The motif on the tops of these Victorian day/night earrings is a snake biting its tail. The drop is hair work and the top is 18kt. yellow gold. To the Victorians, snakes represented eternal love and long life. The snake motif can be found incorporated into Victorian love tokens as well as mourning jewelry.
These day/night earrings are in superb condition with only a few strains of hair having come unglued from the top. The term “day or night” was used with this style of earring because during the day, only the top would be worn. In the evenings, the entire earring would be worn creating a more dramatic effect.
Dimensions: length of entire earrings is 2.75 inches; length of 18kt. gold snake top is 1 and 5/8 inches
Year: 1830-50
