Unique mourning bracelet

Unique Victorian mourning bracelet depicting the enduring symbols of the Christian faith.

The center medallion depicts a cluster of grapes, Symbolizing Christ and his church.  Wine, product of the grape, was symbolic of the blood of Christ which, through the sacrament of baptism, washed away sins and enabled an eternal life.

Two side medallions are adorned with the anchor, cross and flaming heart;  symbolizing  Faith, Hope and Charity.

In the back are four smaller medallions decorated with shields;   symbolizing God’s protection.

Historical note:  With the death of Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, a prolonged period of mourning began in Britain. Jewelry, symbolic of the national mood, was made from dark materials such as onyx, jet, bog oak and vulcanite (also called gutta percha).   This bracelet is made from either bog oak or ebonized wood.

Dimensions:  Center medallion is 1.5 by 2.25 inches.  Four medallion in the back are 0.5 by 1 inch.

Condition:  excellent;  elastic cord is taunt and strong
