Georgian portrait miniature

Superb mourning miniature of a the first wife of Amos Jones.   The miniature is accompanied by a hand written note stating that it depicts:  “Elizabeth Hewellyn Jones, 1st wife of Amos.”

Note that she is depicted in the clouds; symbolizing her assent into Heaven.   The portrait is on ivory and is in pristine condition.

On the reverse is a unique mourning miniature surrounded by braided dark blond hair.   The unusual miniature depicts a grieving woman leaning on a tomb looking at her beloved sailing away to Heaven.   Her finger points to the grave beneath her.  Note the small weeping willow at the base of the tomb.  In the background are rolling hills;  a church steeple and birds in flight.    (The birds symbolizing the soul’s assent into heaven.)    This unusual miniature has fine detail; note the sky is tinted pale blue and orange; lake is tinted pale blue also.   The miniature is comprised of hair work on ivory.

Setting is low karat rose gold.

Dimensions:  2 and 1/8 by 3 and 1/3 inches

Condition:  excellent; portrait miniature and mourning miniature is pristine;  rose gold case has minor wear appropriate with age.
