Rare cameo carving, Diana the huntress

Rare shell cameo carved in high relief after the marble statue  “Diana of Versailles” (located in the Musée du Louvre, Paris.)    The cameo setting and the cameo carving are both of exceptional quality.

The carving has fine detail and is set in a heavy 18kt. yellow gold frame.   On the back of the cameo, is a locket with beveled glass, which can be opened.   The photo on the back is most likely original.

One of the unique aspects of this brooch is the watch pin fitting on the back and the numerous hallmarks stamped on it.

Mythology surrounding Diana:

Diana was the virginal Greek goddess who protected hunters.  Images of Diana in Greek and Roman myth often portray her accompanied by animals, (particularly young stags) or surrounded by women who appealed to her for help in childbearing.

Greek mythology depicted Diana as a protector of children, and responded to the vulnerable and suffering.   She defended the powerless from unjust treatment by the patriarchy, and took decisive action in their behalf.

Diana later became the goddess of the Moon (supplanting Luna), the heavenly light that illuminates the darkness.   Sometimes, she was portrayed as a torchbearer, whose torch or candle lit the way for others.   Regal and dignified, she held the reins of her life, and drove her own chariot through uncharted territory.
