Victorian double heart garnet brooch

A token of  love and affection; two entwined hearts adorned with rose cut garnets.   This was most likely a betrothal gift for the bride to be.  Setting is low karat rose gold, also known as garnet gold.

Garnet is the birth stone for January.  It received its name from the Latin word for pomegranate, “granatum”, because it reminded early scientists of pomegranate seeds.   During the Victorian era, Western cultures believed that garnets would enrich the blood and provide the wearer with a long, healthy life.
