Victorian Medusa cameo, 18kt. rose gold

Exceptional shell cameo carved in high relief.   The contrasting color of the shell accentuates the detail of the wings, hair and snakes.

The cameo depicts the gorgon Medusa, a woman so frightening that one glance at her face would turned a man into stone.

The mythological Medusa was once a beautiful maiden whose hair was her chief glory, but as she dared to vie in beauty with Athena, the goddess deprived her of her charms and changed her beautiful ringlets into hissing serpents.   She became a cruel monster of so frightening an aspect that no living thing could behold her without being turned into stone.

Cameo brooch setting is 18kt. rose gold.

  2. Gorgeous, Darlene! I usually don’t like cameos because the carvings are not at this level. This is just magnificent!
