Georgian hairwork earrings
Rare Georgian gold earrings comprised of sepia and hair work on ivory. The miniatures depict a snake curled around entwined initials. Each miniature also has a tiny pearl and a forget me not. The initials on each earring are unique, suggesting that these earrings either commemorated the death of two people or, were created to celebrate a betrothal. Snakes symbolized both eternal love and eternal life.
The ornate gold setting enhances the beautiful of the miniatures. Earrings are European in origin, most likely Dutch or French and are high karat rose gold.
The design of the wires insures that the earrings sit perfectly in the ear.
Dimensions: center is 1.9 cm by 2.1 cm or approx. 3/4 inch square; length, not including wires, is 2.7 cm or approx. 1 and 1/8 inches
