“Asleep in the Lord”, ivory mourning cross

6743sm

Poignant ivory cross commemorating the loss of a child.   During the Georgian and Victorian era, the rate of infant mortality was very high.   Mother’s were consoled by the knowledge that their innocent child was “asleep in the arms of Jesus”.    This cross is most likely French and is finely carved with excellent detail.   Notice the peaceful expression on the face of the child who has  “gone to Bliss”.
