Museum quality Victorian ivory cherub cross

Impressive in both quality and size,  this Victorian ivory cross is carved in high relief and decorated with a cherub, lily of the valleys, roses and other flowers.

The cross is French in origin and still retains its original chain.

The fine quality of this necklace indicates that it was most likely created by one of the renown Dieppe ivory carvers.

For centuries, the ivory carvers from the port city of  Dieppe were considered the best in the world.  There is still a small colony of ivory carvers in Dieppe, which is located on the North Coast of France.

Dimensions:  large, impressive cross is 2.5 by 4 inches long;  attached necklace is 19 inches long;  cross is 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick

Condition:  a few minor chips which are appropriate with age;  two hairlines (not cracks) on back and one on forehead of putti
