Georgian mourning ring, dated 1780
Poignant Georgian mourning ring in remembrance of a child. The reverse is inscribed, “Tho. Benton ob 10th March 1780 ae 15 months”. The unusual miniature depicts the departed child, who has already ascended into heaven (note wings), pointing to his mother. Conversely, the grieving mother points down to her lost child. Note the saddness shown on the faces of the child and the mother.
A unique mourning miniature that is incredibly moving.
The mourning miniature is comprised of hair and sepia on ivory. The setting is a high karat rose gold.
